"New challenges for Hansenologia Internationalis"

To guarantee the constant advances in science there is the need for a constant flow of information and exchange of knowledge among peers. This relationship between production and distribution is achieved through scientific journals, which thus completes the circle of diffusion of knowledge. In fact, the circulation of knowledge depends on this old system - the publication of the findings of research by the scientific peer-reviewed process. If paper's publishing in journals are largely been replaced, with some advantages, by online publishing system, it does not alter the reasons and characteristics of this practice that dates back to the seventeenth century to the Journal des Savants in France.

Thus maintained the criteria of quality, fairness and rigor of peer review, nothing should restrict the submission and reading of articles, moreover by the frame of its title. This practice, common in academia, finds no support in a more detailed analysis, for the best, for that the last appraiser of an article is the reader himself. Keep this in mind, we do see for good measure a wide and growing variety of journals that appear on the stage of science. Keeping the criteria of quality and earnestness, the more the publishing space, the possibility of wider dissemination.

However, quality should always accompany this expanded amount. The researcher must address the criteria of good research and good product before falling into deceptive criteria of number of publications as commonly occur in the evaluation of career and competitions in some of the universities and institutions of education and research systems in our country . Lies in this, paradoxically, to adoption of other criteria to analyses the quality of the publications not by the content of the contributions, but by the publishing frame, that is, the title of the journal. It is clear that there is a need for space for dissemination of knowledge done with strict quality criteria. However, this must be done regardless of an previous assumption that indicates that a given set of titles are above reproach and other are out of this frame.

Hansenologia Internationalis, one of the few continuous publications on leprosy still in circulation in the world, falls into this thesis. In this sense over the years, it has sought to improve its technical and editorial work, aiming to modernize and, increasingly, assure spaces for publication and improve the careful preparation of the editorial process so that the quality is guaranteed and the democratization of science communication is achieved. So it is with great pleasure that we announce the inauguration of a new period of this journal with the nomination of Professor Susilene Maria Tonelli Nardi to take on the challenging and complex task of editing our journal. After the secure and devoted editorial management of Dr. Dejair Caetano do Nascimento, to whom we effusively express our gratitude for the years of dedication to this difficult task, we welcome Professor. Nardi with our desires of a successful term. We want that your mind and hands allow Hansenologia Internationalis to gain even greater heights, increasing its periodicity and exploring the possibilities of an true international profile. To achieve this we already count on the excellence of the papers submitted, the quality and relevance guaranteed by careful peer review usul to this periodical and the strict adhesion to the bibliometric and bibliotehcnical standards. We urge, therefore, researchers of our country and other countries to participate in this new phase now beginning to Hansenologia Internationalis.
