Brazilian Health System (SUS) is facing challenges due to the increased demand caused by several factors, including the demographic and epidemiological transition, and consequent changes in consumption patterns of services and the incorporation of new technologies. The field of health technology assessment provides to decision makers scientifically valid and transparent information, allowing proper use and technical rationality in resource allocation, essential factors to extend health benefits to be achieved with available resources in terms of access and equity. Brazil has evolved in the institution of technology assessment from 2003, with the establishment of guidelines and clinical protocols, price regulation of medicines and formal policy assessment, development and management of technologies in the SUS.
