PAIVA, Elenir Pereira de et al. Knowledge, attitudes and practices related to prostate cancer in the city of Juiz de Fora, State of Minas Gerais. BIS, Bol. Inst. Saúde (Impr.) [online]. 2012, vol.14, n.1, pp. 57-63. ISSN 1518-1812.

In spite of all the efforts of the National Cancer Institute (Instituto Nacional de Câncer - Inca) to define the incidence of prostate cancer in Brazil, the figures obtained are probably below the reality. Men, historically, seek for health services less than women. The adhesion to the practices of screening for prostate cancer may constitute an important male self-care marker in health. This study aimed to analyze the connection between knowledge, attitudes and practices about prostate cancer detection. It was carried out through household inquiries in a sample of 160 men between 50 and 80 years old residing in an area vinculated to the Family Health Strategy (Estratégia Saúde da Família - ESF) in the city of Juiz de Fora, State of Minas Gerais. Among the men classified with appropriate knowledge, it was found a prevalence of 7.6 times (CI95%=2.4-23.6) higher of them being classified with appropriated practices than those classified with appropriate knowledge. Moreover, those who were classified with appropriate attitudes had a prevalence almost twice higher (PR=1.8; CI=1.1-3.0) of being classified with appropriated practices when compared with those with inappropriate attitudes. It was highlighted the relevance of taking into consideration and understanding the knowledge of the interviewees about prostate cancer. So, touched by the question, health professionals will be able to contribute to the improvement of nursing assistance for men in general.
