The Research Program for the SUS: shared administration in health care - PPSUS - was created in 2004, by the Ministry of Health through the Department of Science and Technology with the intention of developing and encouraging decentralized research activities in the 27 states of the Federation. The main objectives of the program are to fi nancially support the development of research which contribute to the solution of priority health problems of the Brazilian population, contribute to the strengthening and perfecting of the administration of the SUS - Sistema Único de Saúde (Single Health System) and promote scientifi c and technological health development in all the states of the Federation. The decentralized administration model, the program’s trademark, allows the partnership between federal and state administrations to meet health research priorities in each of the states, conferring on the PPSUS a characteristic and personalized format and, therefore, promoting scientifi c and technological health development in each one, as well as the solution of local health problems. All these characteristics describe the main vocation of the program: promote the reduction of regional inequalities in the fi eld of science, technology, and innovation in health. In this article the program and its evolution in the State of São Paulo will be presented.
