KALCKMANN, Suzana  e  PINTO, Elisabete Aparecida. Abortion: free choice?. BIS, Bol. Inst. Saúde (Impr.) [online]. 2010, vol.12, n.2, pp. 185-191. ISSN 1518-1812.

ABSTRACT The intentional interruption of pregnancy is undoubtedly a problem of public health as, despite the existing legal restrictions in place in Brazil, thousands of women undergo abortions. Undergoing an abortion whether by access to safe procedures to carry it out as well as by deciding to, the economic iniquities of type and color/race are evident. With the objective of opening up debate on the theme and provide more solid content to those involved, conversations by men and women have been selected from the study “Abortion from an ethnic and gender perspective”. The results show that the decisions are not linear and depend on a network of complex social relationships. The women heard did not have the possibility of free choice. They opted for an abortion under conditions where they had little control, which represented a further absence of power than the exercise of reproductive liberty.
